Which one would be the best one for the economy?

I was wondering, when i was looking at some new vehicles at a local auto-mall, i noticed that every other car and truck was stick (standard driving) and the others had automatic transmissions. How come we have those two types of engines in today's vehicles and whats the most fuel efficient vehicle for the economy with today's high gas prices, i want to make sure im getting the deal for my money. thanks
